Highland Lake / Mill Brook Watershed
Location:
The Highland Lake / Mill Brook watershed is located in Windham, Westbrook and Falmouth. It extends nearly 8 1/2 miles from above Little Duck Pond in Windham, to East Bridge Street in Westbrook.
Size:
The Highland Lake / Mill Brook watershed is one of the larger sub-watersheds in the Presumpscot River watershed system. At approximately 13 1/2 square miles, it makes up about 7% of the Presumpscot River watershed system.
Population:
The population of the Highland Lake / Mill Brook watershed is a just under 4,400, or 7% of the population in the Presumpscot River watershed system.
Impervious Surfaces:
Impervious surfaces are those surfaces in the landscape that cannot infiltrate rainfall, such as rooftops, pavement, sidewalks, driveways and compacted earth. Impervious surface areas of 10% or greater are often correlated with reduced water quality. Approximately 5% of the Highland Lake / Mill Brook watershed, more than 400 acres, is comprised of impervious surfaces.
